Recently I was packing for the weekend to attend my little cousin’s bridal shower. I started filling my large Encore Clutch and quickly realized it was not going to be big enough to get me through all weekend. Since we were traveling light for this quick trip and I did not want to bring more than one purse, and my only Date Night was in storage under three feet of snow (AND the wrong color!), I immediately thought about making a new bag (and with 24 hours until we left, I had plenty of time!)

At the same time, someone in the Facebook group was asking about enlarging the Encore Clutch and adding a cross body strap to the sides. While well intentioned, the Encore Clutch would quickly become too wide, and cross body straps attached to tabs in the side seams can be a bit wobbly and are less polished than I would like.

Thankfully I hadn’t given up caffeine (again) yet, and managed to draft the most perfect bag. It sewed together in hours, and after that only needed two more prototypes to perfect. There was nothing left that I could change or add to make it better. Somehow I had lucked into the PERFECT spring purse. Just as my back is starting to heal (and I’m still a small-bag person for the immediate future) AND I’m starting to carry far fewer things for Emmett, I’ve been able to really test out this bag in real life and it’s just the right shape and size!

While it’s too small for pockets on the outside, it has two pockets on the inside to contain important things. The patch pocket is just big enough for an iPhone 6, and the zippered pocket can hide some of your personal or valuable items (or your tictacs if you have a toddler who thinks they are fun to dump on the floor!) The bright, clear, full color tutorial-style instructions walk you through a clean-finish zippered pocket with no raw edges showing and a top zipper technique that you will easily learn and LOVE.

Most importantly, the feature panel allows you to use your precious quilting cotton stash without wasting too much, and still lets you back it with a heavier, sturdier, less expensive fabric like denim, canvas, or essex linen. With no foam involved, materials are minimal and pattern pieces are also minimal, so you can spend your time sewing and wearing (or selling!) this bag instead of cutting it out!
