Hi! I'm Erin and I design and write sewing patterns! I'm an introvert and I like math. I try to do all of the hard work for you, so that you can enjoy sewing your project instead of saying mean things to your sewing machine.
So, I write sewing patterns. Mostly for purses, handbags, wallets, and accessories. Sometimes for my dog. (I enjoy sewing clothes too, but I don't plan to design them!) I make dozens of prototypes before writing a single line of the pattern, and then I take hundreds of photos and add them to the detailed instructions. Then I add arrows and notes and labels on top of that. I don't assume that you already know how to create the strap or sew the zipper. I do assume you are going to cut right into your nicest fabric without making a test version, so the pattern better be perfect! Most of my patterns have full size pattern pieces instead of "cut on the fold" both for accuracy and for fussy cutting. Most of my projects involve zippers, because I was never taught to fear the zipper. I promise I will walk you through all things zipper, broken down step-by-step so you're never left guessing. And I am always happy to help!
When I started writing PDF sewing patterns, the name Dog Under My Desk just seemed appropriate. My Yorkie, Loki, slept under my desk all day (and night) while I designed, prototyped, and photographed my bag patterns.
I currently live in iconic Door County, WI with my two boys, Emmett and Charlie, and our sweet Black Lab named Jack. You will often see my six pound Yorkie, Sammy, pop up in pictures. Sammy passed away in 2020 at 14 years old. Sam and Loki had the best life and I miss them every day. Jack can't pass up a nap and he is absolutely my dog, but he comes from a working line and he has chosen Charlie as his "job" - always keeping an eye on him for me, and always ready to take my place so I can escape nap and bed time and go get some work done! I've had to focus on the kids and step back from designing recently, but thanks to a LOT of help, I'm finally starting to get back to work.
I’m an analytical kind of person, which translates well into the sewing world. I'm not super artistic (I can't draw a stick figure!) so allowing the sewing machine to make the art for me allows me to be creative in ways I couldn't be without it. I like the technical side of sewing – accurate seams, math, figuring out construction, and explaining it. I'm just so happy that I found a way to apply those skills in a way that can make it my job and not just a hobby!
And finally, I could not do this without all of you, my customers and my blog readers. Thank you all for being endlessly encouraging and supportive! Please know that you are loved!
Thank you!
